marcus baney thoughts on life, love, photography, and lifting.

A Journal Excerpt - 08.03.11.

From my journal yesterday, continuing through Romans.

Romans 11:11 “Did God’s people stumble and fall beyond recovery? Of course not! They were disobedient, so God made salvation available to the gentiles. But He wanted His own people to become jealous and claim it for themselves.”

I just love the first part of this verse. Especially given the history of Israel with God. They wandered from Him so many times, got themselves in so many terrible situations through disobedience, and yet God was always right there to scoop them up and set them right again.

It serves to remind me that life is about process, not product. God’s not looking for us to become some shiny, finished object (mostly because I think He knows it’s not possible). At the end of the day I’m not even sure if He cares about progress. Our society seems to claim ascertainable progress as the top benchmark for anything we are doing. But after reading the story of mankind and God, man never seems to make any progress at all, and yet God still cares for us and loves us.

It’s like the puppy who tears up your couch. You hate what he did, but you can’t help but love him because you realize that he’s just too dumb to know anything about what he’s doing. It’s sort of endearing in a way. Sometimes I think that’s how God must feel about us. And I love Him for that.
