Body Mass Index vs. Body Fat Percentage
A quick note: I saw a program on TV today talking a lot about how important it is to know your BMI (Body Mass Index). While I think your BMI is a good starting point for gauging fitness, it is not by any means something to be held seriously. It is just a comparison of height and weight. That’s it. At 5’9” and 178 pounds, my BMI is technically 26.6, which falls well into the ‘overweight’ category, which for those who know me, is not even close to accurate. The only true way to gauge the amount of fat on your body, and what your fitness goals are/should be is with a body fat percentage test. Don’t trust scales (remember that muscle weighs more than fat, so scales alone cannot portray accurate progress) or BMI tests. Consult a fitness expert or personal trainer at your local gym for a body fat test. Have a great week!
